Product assembly varies between each specific product. Installation instructions are provided with your shipment for each product and on each product specification page online.

In many cases, products are easily transferable between old and new vehicles. However, product transferability does depend on many variables including vehicle year/make/model, other equipment, etc. For more information, please contact Havis Sales Team.

Power indicators vary by docking station, so please refer to your docking station owner’s manual for this information. Also, you can check the charge indicator on the computer. If there is no power to the dock, you will not charge the computer.

Serial port (Com Port) assignment will vary according to docking station type, computer and configuration. For clarification, please contact Havis Technical Support through our Contact Us form.

For all Panasonic and Dell models, antennas use TNC connectors. For General Dynamics, one antenna is TNC and one antenna is SMA.

The main difference between the Standard and Premium Passenger Side Mount Packages is improved motion and stability. The Premium Packages offer a side support with an even sturdier mount than the Standard Packages. The upgraded motion device allows for positive locking rotation control and slide-in-and-out positioning of the computer. The upgraded pole allows for on-the-go height adjustment via a conveniently located handle.

Havis Equipment Brackets secure a wide range of control heads into our consoles. If you cannot find a listing for a specific control head, look at the universal 2-piece equipment brackets for a solution. To find a 2-piece bracket, you will need the width and height of your equipment. Our Equipment Bracket Configurator will help you determine which bracket set is needed.

If a customer desires a 1-piece equipment bracket, please contact a Havis Sales Representative to see if we can help. Not all brackets requests will be granted due to quantity and popularity of control head.

Prisoner Transport

Three basic models are available

  • Single compartment with single rear door
  • Dual compartment with full length center divider and double rear doors
  • Triple compartment with full length center divider, double rear doors and small side entry compartment

Yes. Due to lack of sales, we discontinued the least popular inserts.

The customer must communicate the request through the Havis Sales Team. If the sales person cannot convince the customer to choose a promoted model, then it is up to the Sales Team to gather facts and submit a New Product Request to Sales Management and Engineering for approval. Not all requests will be approved.

The name “Kwik-Kit” and part numbers with the “KK” prefix have been changed to Prisoner Transport (PT) for improved product recognition and category selection. This name and number change is also a good way to benchmark the various revisions to the product line.

The new number system for the main inserts will now include a vehicle specific code to differentiate and simplify what parts are included for different model vehicles. The length and compartment configurations are also described in the new part number.

Example: PT-F03-120-3

  • Product family = PT
  • Vehicle description (Ford Transit/extended wheel base/low roof) = F03
  • Length (in inches) of insert = 120
  • Number of compartments in configuration = 3

Old options and accessories have not changed except for part numbers. The new number system is based off of other Havis product lines with multiple sub-categories. This allows each category to expand more easily when new parts are added.

Vans with the following features and options are recommended:

  • Van chassis with the highest GVWR available (see next FAQ)
  • OEM optional rear air conditioning/heat system or OEM optional rear AC/heat prep package
    • Rear climate control is very important for the safety of the passengers. Depending on the vehicle and what OEM system is ordered, Havis offers various solutions to cool and heat the rear compartments. You should check the Havis HVAC options prior to ordering your specific van.
  • White or light exterior body color
    • A white color van can be up to 20° cooler inside. This will greatly help with the rear climate control.
  • Window glass in rear and side doors
    • It has been proven that when transporting people in the rear compartments, having windows in the van doors only will minimize the possibility of individuals vomiting. The windows also provide visibility for the officer prior to opening doors.
  • Power windows and door locks
  • Trim level packages and other options are up to the customer

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The higher the GVWR, the more weight carrying capacity (payload) the vehicle will have. It is important not exceed the OEM maximum payload. If the vehicle is overloaded, it could affect the handling, braking and/or cause premature need for repairs. Van chassis with the highest GVWR are always recommended.

Prisoner Transport Inserts and Estimated Payload Facts

100″ long Prisoner Transport Insert (based on model PT-F01-100-3 with standard accessories)

10 passengers / 2 officers (200 lbs each person)

  • 12 x 200 = 2400 lbs
  • PT sheet metal and accessories = 900 lbs
  • Total Estimated Payload = 3300 lbs

120″ long Prisoner Transport Insert (based on model PT-F01-120-3 with standard accessories)

12 passengers / 2 officers (200 lbs each person)

  • 14 x 200 = 2800 lbs
  • PT sheet metal and accessories = 1000 lbs
  • Total Estimated Payload = 4200 lbs

Depending on your particular job requirements, installation should take about 10 hours for the smaller jobs and up to 26 hours for a very large, complex installation. Plan for additional hours for optional equipment. See product pages for estimated install times. We recommend that installers preview instructions found on the website.

Inserts are shipped partially pre-assembled on one or two pallets. This ensures that all parts are included, and that they fit properly. It also ensures the product arrives undamaged. Freight costs will vary, depending on the size of the unit purchased and its destination. (Note: Assembly is required for installation into your van.)

Windows are recommended in the rear doors. If using the passenger side entrance for prisoners, we also recommend windows in the side doors. This allows the officer to see the prisoners prior to opening the doors and minimizes the possibility of someone getting sick in the back.

The rear step provided with the prisoner transport inserts will work with OEM regular bumpers and rear step bumpers.

The OEM side step or running board must be removed in order to mount the Prisoner Transport Side Slide Out Step.

The trailer hitch must be removed in order to mount the Prisoner Transport Standard Rear Step.

You have 2 installation options. If you have your own installation facility, you can follow our step-by-step instructions to assemble the insert yourself. You can also contact a Havis reseller to install your prisoner transport insert.

Current 50″ high inserts will fit into 2004-2014 Ford Econoline or 2004-2022 Chevy Express vans. Depending on what OEM air conditioning system the vehicle has, some fittings may be difficult to locate.

2007-2022 Chevy Express G-Series 1500, 2500, 3500 Van

2015 and newer Ford Transit Van

2014-and newer Dodge Ram ProMaster Full Size Van

The inserts will only work in a Chevy van with a three fuel cell CNG system. Inserts will NOT work in a Chevy van with a four fuel cell CNG system.

Regular van with 130″ wheel base, low roof (83.6″), 9000 lb GVWR and 3620-4000 lb maximum payload

Regular van with 130″ wheel base, medium roof (100.8″), 9000 lb GVWR and 3500-3940 lb maximum payload

Long van with 148″ wheel base (not extended), low roof (83.2″), 9000 – 9500 lb GVWR and 3460-4390 lb maximum payload

Long van with 148″ wheel base (not extended), medium roof (100.7″), 9000 – 9500 lb GVWR and 3390-4340 lb maximum payload

Note: Ford offers the Transit van in long length (148″ wheel base) and long length (148″ wheel base) with extended body length. Havis does NOT offer or recommend inserts for the Transit (148″ wheel base) long extended body length vans (jumbo).

The 60″ high insert for the medium roof van will fit into the high roof Transit van. Havis will not be offering a taller insert. Low and medium roof vans are recommended.

Option 1:

Transit van with OEM optional rear AC/heat system. Order optional vent adaptor kit PT-A-503 to connect to the Ford Transit rear OEM system.

Notes:

  • The air conditioning evaporator/blower is located in the driver side rear of van. The heater core/blower is located under the passenger side front seat. PT-A-503 includes AC and heat blower hose adaptors, duct hose, AC ceiling vents, heat front wall vents, hose clamps and hardware.
  • Depending on what model insert you choose, we offer three different hose guard kits for the front heater hoses. These guards cover and protect the hoses that run along the floor from under the passenger seat to the front bulkhead. Optional hose guard kits are PT-A-504, PT-A-505 and PT-A-506.
  • Van with OEM rear AC/heat system is recommended for ease of installation. See web site for details.

Option 2:

Transit van with OEM Rear AC Fittings Prep Package 62C. Order optional rear AC/heat kit PT-A-403.

Notes:

  • The Ford 62C Prep Package includes OEM fittings connected under the hood with hoses that terminate under the vehicle (approximately under the driver seat area).
  • Air conditioning/heat mechanic with proper recovery and refrigerant equipment is necessary.
  • The air conditioning and heat blower is at the driver side rear corner. PT-5XX hose covers are not needed.

Option 3:

Transit van with front AC/heat only (no OEM rear AC/Heat system or prep package). Order optional rear AC/heat kit PT-A-404.

Notes:

  • Air conditioning/heat mechanic with proper recovery and refrigerant equipment is necessary.
  • The air conditioning and heat blower is at the driver side rear corner. PT-5XX hose covers are not needed.

Kits manufactured from 2007-2014 can be used in the Transit van with minor modifications for the rear AC/heat. A new rear step (PT-A-103) and/or side step (PT-A-203) must also be ordered in addition to one of the following AC/Heat options:

Ford OEM optional complete rear AC/heat system with Havis optional vent adaptor kit PT-A-503.

  • Driver side rear bulkhead will require a 1.5″ wide x 10″ high notch cutout for AC system rear blower.
  • Front Bulkhead will require 3″ diameter holes cut for the vents and hoses that attach to the OEM heater blower.

Ford OEM optional rear AC/heat prep package (62C) with Havis optional aftermarket AC/heat system PT-A-403.

  • Driver side rear bulkhead will require a 1.5″ wide x 10″ high notch cutout for aftermarket AC/heat system

RE: No Ford OEM AC/heat system with Havis optional aftermarket AC/heat system PT-A-404.

  • Driver side rear bulkhead will require a 1.5″ wide x 10″ high notch cutout for aftermarket AC/heat system

The OEM bumper includes backup sensors that work with the standard prisoner transport rear step, but the sensors detect the optional flip step when it is in the stowed/closed position. The flip step can be used; however, it will require the driver to push the OEM sensor deactivation switch every time the van is in reverse.

Regular van with 136″ wheel base, high roof (101″), 8900 lb GVWR and 4113 lb maximum payload

Note: Dodge offers the ProMaster van in long length (159″ wheel base) and long length (159″ wheel base) with extended length. Havis does NOT offer or recommend inserts for the ProMaster (159″ wheel base) long extended length vans.

Option 1:

ProMaster van with OEM rear AC prep package without rear controls order code HDG. Order optional rear AC/heat kit PT-A-405.

Notes:

  • The Dodge HDG prep package includes OEM fittings connected under hood with hoses that terminate under the vehicle (approximately under the driver seat area).
  • Air conditioning/heat mechanic with proper recovery and refrigerant equipment is necessary.

Option 2:

ProMaster van with front AC/heat only (no OEM rear AC/Heat system or prep package). Order optional rear AC/heat kit PT-A-406.

Notes:

  • Air conditioning/heat mechanic with proper recovery and refrigerant equipment is necessary.
  • ProMaster van does not have an OEM rear AC/heat option, and therefore, a vent adaptor kit is not available.

​​Old prisoner transport inserts cannot be used in ProMaster vans, because the wheel wells are too tall to fit underneath the prisoner bench. The new 60″ high inserts include 16″ high bench seats for proper clearance in ProMaster van applications.

The OEM bumper includes backup sensors that work with the standard prisoner transport rear step, but the sensors detect the optional flip step when it is in the stowed/closed position. The flip step can be used; however, it will require the driver to push the OEM sensor deactivation switch every time the van is in reverse. In addition to the sensor issue, the ProMaster cargo floor is lower to the ground than other vans, because it has front wheel drive, which allows the cargo floor to be lower. If the flip step where used, it would be approximately 5″ off the ground.

We highly recommend installing a ½” plywood sub-floor under the insert. This will provide the desired flat surface over top of the OEM ribbed metal floor. The plywood also greatly reduces interior road noise. Plywood is not provided with the insert and must be supplied by the installer. Rubber matting between the OEM floor and insert is NOT recommended, because it will trap moisture and can compress over time, causing floor screws to loosen.

Sound deadening material with insulation qualities has proven to be very important if you want to minimize noise and maximize HVAC efficiency. Many different methods to solve these concerns have been tried and tested. The material used for the PT-A-904 is 1″ thick foam with a Mylar moisture barrier. It also includes pre-applied adhesive, so the installer only needs to measure, cut, peel backing paper and stick to the walls of the van. Spray on foam or fiberglass insulation is not recommended.

For many years, we have recommended only one PT-A-903 power vent for any insert configuration. This has proven to be adequate for exhausting undesirable odors. Additional power vents can be installed if desired, but it is not necessary for most applications. If you choose to block off the upper mesh area of the rear insert doors with the optional PT-A-913 cover panel, then additional vents should be considered. Roof power vents are not an adequate solution for air conditioning.

This van is also known as a “jumbo” van. Single and double compartment inserts will work, but the 120″ long triple compartment inserts would need to be positioned further forward, so the prisoner transport side compartment door will open. This van also has a high roof that our inserts are not designed for. The large overall size of this van has proven not to be a desirable chassis for most prisoner transport applications and is not recommended.

Prisoner transport inserts are designed for cargo vans with windows in the doors only. The insert would fit into a window van if parts of the interior were removed or modified, but it is not recommended.

Our PT-A-104 rear step will NOT work with a trailer hitch. If your ProMaster van has a trailer hitch, you will need to remove the hitch/bumper assembly, and order the standard OEM rear step bumper. The PT-A-104 rear step only works with the standard step bumper.
